Hull KR “looking for more than one halfback” says Tony Smith

Hull KR head coach Tony Smith insists the club are looking for more than one halfback but are being patient with their search, report Hull Live.

With Danny McGuire, Josh Drinkwater and Chris Atkin all leaving, Smith is left with new recruit Jordan Abdull and youngster Mikey Lewis as his only halves options.

Rovers have been linked with several halfbacks, including Richie Myler, Dec Patton and Matty Smith, however those links have fizzled out.

And Smith has said he is keen on more than just one half, with squad depth the priority in 2020.

“Halfbacks are the priority at the moment but generally I’m looking for quality players who can add depth to the squad,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what position they play if they can add value to the squad for next year. We want to have depth.

“But there’s still a couple of crucial areas we need to strengthen in and certainly half-back is one of them.

“We are looking for more than one half-back. We’re going through the processes at the moment.

“There’s a bit of activity up and around the place. We could have easily jumped in on a couple of things already but we haven’t.

“We want to see the full picture before we go ahead and sign somebody.”
