Sky Sports presenter links two huge new names to vacant Hull FC job

Over two weeks have now passed since Tony Smith parted company with Hull FC yet the Black and Whites are seemingly no closer to appointing a successor.

Hull face Leeds Rhinos on Sunday, with interim Head Coach Simon Grix taking charge but they come into the game on the back of shipping 50 points in two consecutive games, and four of their last five.

Salford Red Devils Head Coach, Paul Rowley, turned down an offer to take charge of the club. However, according to Sky Sports pundit, Jenna Brooks, Hull FC remain keen to bring in an English head coach.

Hull FC chasing Super League Head Coach

According to Brooks, who linked FC with NRL assistant coaches, Brian McDermott, and Lee Briers, last week, Hull are now looking closer to home.

Speaking in the build up to the St Helens v Huddersfield game, Brooks put forward two huge new names.

“I am hearing Hull are targeting a British coach and I’m going to pose two names to you.

“What about the likes of Steve McNamara? I know he has signed a two-year contract extension, but could he return home to Hull?”

There has been some movement already at Hull FC with Richie Myler making his first official appointment with Gareth Ellis returning to the club as Performance Director after his brief stint away from the club.

Could England Head Coach be heading to Hull?

Shaun Wane is the current England Head Coach. However, he has previously tasted success as a coach in Super League. Wane has a long association with Wigan Warriors and led the club through a successful period.

Wane led the Cherry and Whites to three Super League titles, one League Leader’s Shield, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge. Now, according to Brooks, he may be in line for the top job in West Hull.

“What about Shaun Wane? Could he potentially want to take charge of a club again?”

Wane has a contract to lead England until the 2025 World Cup but he could do both jobs at the same time, given the lack of international fixtures. Wane may decide this is the right opportunity to return to club management.

Earlier in the week, Jon Wilkin, dismissed the possibility of McDermott or Briers taking the Hull FC job, despite the pair being heavily linked in reports from down under.

Wilkin believes McDermott is unlikely to leave the NRL at this stage. He believes he is in line to get the head coach’s job at Newcastle.

“There’s a lot of rumours that he’s going to maybe get the top job there or that he’s in line to get the top job there. So, I’d be very surprised if he came back to the UK.”

As for Briers, Wilkin believes it is too soon for him to take on a head coach role in Super League.

“I wouldn’t go away from the trajectory that his coaching career is on right now and take a pressurised job like Hull FC.
