Huge Konrad Hurrell decision made

St Helens star Konrad Hurrell

This weekend there are some huge games as Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils battle, Leeds Rhinos head over to Hull FC and Warrington Wolves meet Castleford Tigers which could have a huge impact on Wakefield Trinity who take on Champions St Helens.

The Trin still sit bottom of the Super League table, and are two points adrift of safety; but there is still plenty of reason for them to believe ahead of the game against the World Champions. Wakefield’s wins this season have all come against the proverbial ‘big boys’ this season, as they have beaten Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, Salford Red Devils and Warrington Wolves at home this year; but can they add another big name to their list of scalps?

The Saints have gone under the radar this season, despite still being one of the better sides in the league. They haven’t quite hit their typical brilliance, but still come into Sunday’s game chasing the League Leaders Shield. They have won their last five games and will be looking to make it six on the spin this week.Β  A win would not only keep the pressure on table toppers Catalans Dragons, but if results go their way they could easily end the weekend at the summit themselves.

St Helens have won their last five league fixtures going into Round 24 of Betfred Super League 2023, the latest of which was a commanding first-half performance over Castleford Tigers at The Jungle last Friday night. It’s tight at the top of the table, with the Saints looking to push toward the top spot as the end of the regular season draws near.

Wellens welcomes to his squad two senior players with Matty Lees back available after serving his two-match suspension and Konrad Hurrell who could mark his return following a calf injury that ruled him out of the last four Saints games.

Their hosts on Sunday Wakefield currently sit bottom of the Super League table and are desperate to survive in the top flight but are currently in the spot that would see them relegated at the end of the season.

In recent months they have given themselves hope with four crucial home wins and they will be desperate to get their next positive result. Three of their final four fixtures, including Sunday’s, will be in front of their own fans, so both Saints and Wakefield head into the fixture highly motivated at either end of the league ladder, in what promises to be a lively atmosphere.

However, that atmosphere may be dampened by the absence of Max Jowitt and Reece Lyne through injury.

Trinity have lost former Hull FC centre Reece Lyne for the rest of the season in a huge blow for their hopes of Super League survival.

Jowitt’s absence is damaging but will likely see Will Dagger start at fullback.
