Former St Helens man rejects Super League to stay in Union

Former St Helens flyer Regan Grace left the sport at the end of the 2022 Super League season to make the switch to union and despite speculation of a return the Welshman has remained in the ‘other code’.

His move away from St Helens saw him join French Rugby Union side Racing 92 but the move was hampered from the off due to Grace rupturing his achilles whilst playing at Saints.

That ended his Super League season and saw his first year with Racing spent rehabbing the injury before eventually leaving the club without having played a game.

After training with English side Bath, it was confirmed last month that the winger had signed a deal with them which looked to signify a new dawn in his career after having lost a season due to that injury.

It also ended any speculation that he would return to Super League, a strong rumour that had emerged late in 2023 with Hull KR being one of the clubs that was talked about.

Despite those rumours of a move to Craven Park, Serious About Rugby League revealed last December that there was no substance to them, but certain Super League sides were interested.

That’s been confirmed by Union publication RugbyPass who have reported that Grace “snubbed” Super League sides before penning his deal with Bath.

They reported that Grace “turned down several approaches for a return to Super League”, which begs the question of which sides possibly made contact.

Which Super League side tried to sign Regan Grace?

Super League

With it being confirmed that the Hull KR rumours were nonsense, it leads to the possible suggestion that one of the other strongly linked clubs perhaps made a move.

Wigan Warriors were one of those sides and it would have been a major shock to see Grace return to Super League and join a rival of his former club St Helens.

There was also suggestions that Grace would not count for as much money against the cap with him joining from a different code, something that was actually untrue.

Because of the fact Grace was initially a rugby league player, he would not be classed as a union convert which would have meant that the winger would have likely been an expensive man to tie down and count heavily against the cap.

With that in mind teams that could have targetted him might have been high spenders such as Catalans Dragons who have always boasted a strong British contingent in their side, added to the fact that Grace had already made a switch to France prior,

One thing is for sure tough and that’s the fact the Welshman will be staying in Rugby Union for the foreseeable meaning we may never see his talents grace Super League, a real shame given how dominant he was at St Helens.
