Former Leeds hooker made Leigh captain

Scotland international hooker Liam Hood has been confirmed as Leigh Centurions’ captain for the 2021 Betfred Super League season.

Whilst ex-Rhino Hood takes the captaincy, Tyrone McCarthy and Joe Mellor have been chosen as vice captains by boss John Duffy.

Hood, who was the club’s vice captain last season, said he was delighted to receive the honour on the eve of the new campaign.

He said: “This is a huge honour to captain this great club. I have been overwhelmed by the number of messages I have received since the announcement was made on social media and I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone for their good wishes.”

Hood rejoined Leigh after a brief spell with Widnes Vikings in 2019 but originally signed for the Club in 2016. When the Championship season was suspended in 2020, there was plenty of interest from Super League clubs in signing Hood but he remained loyal to the Centurions.

Hood started his professional career with Leeds Rhinos, and, after loan stints with Hunslet Hawks and Dewsbury, he moved to Salford Red Devils. After a short stay with Swinton, the number nine signed for Leigh ahead of the 2020 season where he was one of the club’s most consistent performers.
