Exclusive: Ex-Warrington and Wigan star Anthony Gelling in ‘ongoing’ talks over shock UK move

Anthony Gelling is in talks over a shock return to the UK, not even a year after he returned to his native New Zealand following a spell at the Leigh Centurions.

And, it’s the Leigh Centurions who are in talks with the former Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves to bring him back.

Leigh owner Derek Beaumont spoke exclusively to Serious About Rugby League about the current situation with Gelling.

“I’m trying to get Anthony Gelling back, I’m trying to get any quality player over here and he is available,” Beaumont said.

“He doesn’t need a visa or anything and he’s got British dual nationality.

“Whether or not he is prepared to do that, the proof will be in the pudding.

“At the moment he has not agreed to do so but it’s ongoing.

“In the time he was there, he was outstanding and it was a shame to see him go.”

Gelling first came to the UK shores with the Wigan Warriors in 2011, playing 115 games over a period of six seasons before leaving for the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2017 Super League season.

The three-quarter returned to England with the Widnes Vikings where he played 18 times and then the Warrington Wolves in 2020 where he registered 13 appearances.

A short spell at Leigh – with six games under his belt – ended midway through 2021 as Gelling left to return home.
