Ex-Leeds Rhinos target Tariq Sims signs for new club after St George Illawarra Dragons allow release

Tariq Sims will be leaving St George Illawarra Dragons at the end of 2022 – and could even leave sooner if the right deal comes along.

Fijian international Sims has signed for the Melbourne Storm for 2023 and beyond, but Craig Bellamy wants him in the fold now.

Nine News reporter Danny Weidler has said that not only is the deal done for 2023, but talks are underway between the two clubs to try and make the move happen immediately.

“Melbourne want Tariq Sims to be playing for them now,” Weidler said.

“They want him to boost their team now, and I think that could actually happen.

“There are talks underway between Sims and the Dragons and Melbourne to make Tariq Sims (move) in 2022, which would be a fantastic result for the Storm… not so much the Dragons who I think will miss his extreme strength and utility value.”

As many as eight clubs were said to be chasing him before Christmas, but now Sims had spoken of his desire to prove himself.

“I’m under no illusion what’s at stake but I’m always one to run towards the competition and prove myself,” Sims told Channel 9.

“It was very emotional at the start (when he knew he wouldn’t be staying), it’s a business and I love my Dragons.

“I’ve never taken anything for granted pulling on the jersey – before every game, before I put my jersey on, I smell it and I think about my family, my teammates and those who have pulled it on before me and making sure I represent them the best I can.

“To pull on the Red Vee again is very exciting.”
