Wigan Warriors lift the Grand Final trophy

The Super League Grand Final is the showpiece event in rugby league, it’s the game that every team starts their season aiming to win but in 28 years just four teams have lifted the trophy.

Whilst the first two seasons of Super League history didn’t recognise the Grand Final in its current form they did still have a comparable end-0f-season tournament named simply the Rugby League Premiership.

It wasn’t till 1998 that the Grand Final as we know it was created, however in the almost three decades that have passed since then the playoffs and journey to the big game has changed a lot.

Regardless of how teams get there though it is still the game that everyone wants to win and in 2024 eleven Super League sides will by vying to take the crown of holders Wigan Warriors.

The Grand Final always takes place at the end of the season, marking the final game of the domestic calendar as it crowns the Super League Champions.

In 2024 the Grand Final is set to take place on Saturday 12th October at Old Trafford, home of the showpiece event since its creation barring the Covid-19-affected 2020 season.

Wigan Warriors defeated Catalans Dragons in the 2023 Grand Final at Old Trafford by a score of 10-2 as the match marked the joint-lowest score recorded in the game’s history.

That victory saw Wigan claim their sixth title and their first since 2018 with St Helens having lifted the trophy in the previous four seasons from 2019 through 2022.

Matt Peet’s side started the season as the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the Grand Final once again with Super League sponsors Betfred pricing them up at 2/1, whereas beaten finalists Catalans Dragons rank fifth in the betting at 10/1. Given their impressive starts, the two teams have moved into 5/4 and 7/1 respectively.

Come October the Grand Final will be broadcast live on TV with Super League’s main broadcaster Sky Sports showing the game, as they have for the past 26 years.

In 2023 Sky Sports aired the game on their Main Event channel however they have since secured a new TV deal which will see them bring in a streaming service.

Despite that, the game will likely be aired on their Main Event channel anyway with the broadcasters creating a new-look commentary team for 2024.

That has seen them replace the retiring Phil Clarke with Dave Woods, Mark Wilson and former St Helens player and four-time Grand Final winner Kyle Amor – three of the sport’s most beloved commentators.

Last season both Wilson and Amor worked on commentary to cover the 2023 Grand Final for Channel 4 and earned rave reviews for their coverage, however, Channel 4 have since lost their Super League contract with BBC outbidding them.

Whilst it has been reported that the BBC will have two end-of-season games it is unclear if they have secured the rights to show the Grand Final, meaning at present Sky Sports Main Event will be the way to watch the game on TV.
