Could huge star play surprise position more often after coach’s comments?

St Helens were doing it tough going into their game against Hull KR.

This was especially in the middle of the park where a number of injuries meant centre Mark Percival had to start in the backrow.

During the game star fullback Jack Welsby moved into the pack as well at loose-forward and Paul Wellens has confirmed that he enjoyed the role and it is something they could consider in the future:

“With a player like Jack I think it’s easy, he’s a natural player who you don’t need to sit down and educate him on where he needs to stand,” Wellens said on Saints TV.

“He reminds of the kid at the park on a Sunday morning who just goes and gets the job done, he’s quite refreshing in that sense to work with a player like Jack.

“After the game he told me how much he enjoyed the position and getting his hand on the ball so it’s something for us to consider moving forward.”

This week the Saints take on league leaders Warrington Wolves and Wellens gave his view on the Wolves:

“I think you have to pay a huge amount of credit to Daryl Powell, you look at last year and you talk about doing it tough. Well he’s certainly done that and now he’s brought in players he wanted and recruited well and he’s getting results off the back of it.

“He’s a coach who’s turned the situation around in fine style and he’s certainly getting the results.”

He has been impressed by the Wolves signings specifically Paul Vaughan: “Yeah he was obviously an impressive player in the NRL and he’s got in there and I think it was only last week that they announced they’d extended his contract. That’s a clear sign of how much they value him as a player.

“He’s a player with a wealth of experience and you can never have too many of them, he’s certainly improved their team.”
