Chester praises togetherness of squad

Wakefield Trinity Head Coach Chris Chester has praised his players after their narrow 20-18 defeat against St Helens at Headingley.

The bottom side in the Super League led 12-0 in the first half against the champions. They were also down to their final 17 players after standing eight down due to a positive COVID test.

He said: “I’d like to think the players give their all every week.

“The adversity we have faced have brought us closer together as a group. We’ve not carried on in the press, or whinged and moaned about who we have missing.

“We wanted to ensure this wasn’t an excuse for a sub-standard performance.

“Usually, when you put young kids in, they always have that enthusiasm, and I thought they did that tonight. The more senior players then feed off that enthusiasm.

“We go into every game wanting to do our best, unfortunately our best wasn’t quite good enough.

“But there are signs we are turning the corner defensively.”
