Brett Hodgson “disgusted” by defeat to Hull KR buts says “I’ve never known a season like this”

Hull FC’s season ended on a disappointing note yesterday as they were soundly beaten by their rivals Hull KR in the final game of the season.

Making matters worse, the game meant very little and was simply the battle for eighth place after both teams missed out on play-off rugby after difficult second halves of the season.

Exacerbating things further, Hull KR only named 16 men for the game due to the injuries in their squad. Now, that is not to say Hull FC haven’t had struggles of their own but losing to 16 men in the manner that they did will have only frustrated fans, players and coaches alike.

Frustrated is perhaps the best word to describe Hull boss Brett Hodgson after the game who said he was disgusted when talking to the Hull website: “Disappointing is probably the least descriptive word you could use for that performance – I’m disgusted that we put in a performance like that in front of such a big crowd. We were aiming to finish the season positively, but to end the season like that is just not acceptable.

“I am angry – the performance we put out meant that we didn’t give ourselves a chance of getting back into the game. It’s very difficult to find words right now, but we’re under no illusions that that wasn’t good enough for this club.

“We, and unfortunately the fans too, now have to take that away into the off-season, and it’s going to hurt for a very long time.”

He did note that it has been a tough season for the Black and Whites especially towards the end as injuries mounted: “We’ve had a tough end to the season and this performance sums up our back end of the year really. For us as a collective to not get up for this game is just not okay – no matter whether that’s performance anxiety or something else.

“I have never known a season like this in terms of adversity, but we had one more eighty minutes to get up for against a side who have also faced a lot of adversity, so we aren’t using that as an excuse.”
