Wigan Warriors outside back departs for another Super League club

Wigan Warriors have parted ways with centre Chris Hankinson.

After joining Wigan midway through 2018, Hankinson went on to make 23 appearances for the club, scoring four tries and converting 18 goals, before spending the 2021 season on a season long-loan with London Broncos.

The goalkicking centre is expected to sign for a Super League rival, despite having another year left on his Wigan contract.

Hankinson has played almost 150 career games, but only 23 of them have come in a Cherry and White jersey in three-and-a-half seasons.

Whilst other Super League sides continue to be busy in the transfer market, Wigan’s recruitment has seemingly been put on hold after the announcement of trio Patrick Mago, Kaide Ellis and Abbas Miski back in July.

Iain Thornley is strongly expected to be at the DW Stadium in 2022, but that has yet to be announced. However, Hankinson was expected to provide cover in a position where the Warriors have struggled to fill.

Both Liam Farrell and Willie Isa spent much of the 2021 Super League season filling in in the centre position, with Oliver Gildart departing for the NRL too, Wigan look slightly thin in the outside backs.
