Warrington Wolves’ Josh Charnley addresses his future

Warrington Wolves winger Josh Charnley is one of the most potent attacking outlets in Super League.

The current Warrington Wolves star has been one of the main wingers in the Super League competition for the past decade and has been at the Halliwell Jones since 2018 following a spell in rugby union.

And, Charnley has revealed just why that two-year spell with Sale Sharks in the 15-man code wasn’t as successful as he had hoped.

“It didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to turn out,” Charnley told the Take Flight podcast.

“I think I needed more time invested into me, I would have stayed there 12 hours a day if it meant bettering myself.

“It’s a business though, you’re a piece of meat and at the time they signed Denny Solomona and Marlon Yarde who were two international wingers and I wasn’t established enough.”

Speculation had been quashed emphatically by Charnley earlier in the 2021 season after rumours of a move away and the winger was determined to stake his claim for a wing spot under new head coach Daryl Powell.

But, he is out of contract at the end of the 2022 season and the third-highest try scorer in Super League history revealed he wouldn’t be averse to going back to union.

“I don’t regret anything I do, but I do look back and think what if?

“I’m enjoying myself at the minute, but I’m out of contract at the and of the year and if Sale or any other rugby union cub came in for me I’d give it another go – you’ve got to.”

He had previously scored 162 tries in 171 appearances for hometown club Wigan before moving into the 15-a-side code in 2016.
