Tom Johnstone likely to join Super League rivals or Wakefield Trinity

It seems set that we are about to see a merry-go-round of wingers in Super League including England international Tom Johnstone.

The winger has been linked with a return to Wakefield Trinity whilst it is understood that he could also join another Super League club with the Englishman set to return to the UK in 2025.

Wakefield have also made its ambition clear in terms of targeting major signings and that has led to reports that they will move to sign Tom Johnstone at the end of 2024 upon the expiry of his current contract.

Johnstone left Wakefield at the end of 2022 and showed he belonged at the top of Super League with Catalans Dragons.

Powell was asked about the rumour he could return to the club. When asked if he could shed any light on the matter, Powell said: “Not really, just there’s rumours about everywhere, about all sorts of things. I think the one thing we want to be is a team in the top four in Super League so I suppose those sort of rumours will continue yeah but we want to be signing top quality players I haven’t got any news on anybody at the moment but you know for certain we’ll be in the market for some of the top players in the game.”

Tom Johnstone move more likely than ever

It seems a move for Tom Johnstone is more likely now than ever. This is because of rumours linking Catalans Dragons with a replacement in the shape of Tommy Makinson from St Helens.

This is the beginning of what is expected to be a merry-go-round of wingers in Super League with the likes of Tom Davies, David Fusitu’a, Ryan Hall and Joe Burgess all off contract as well making now the ideal time to enter the market for a top notch winger.

The fact that Catalans are seemingly assessing potential replacements for Johnstone appears to point to a likely exit for the winger to a British Super League club.
