The question mark on Gareth Widdop’s future at Warrington Wolves

He has endured a tough few seasons at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, but Gareth Widdop has shown in flashes what a brilliant player he is.

Against St Helens – in a narrow two-point loss – Widdop was instrumental at fullback which is a position he has very rarely played at Warrington Wolves.

Brought in as an experienced halfback, the experiment with Widdop and Williams in the halves doesn’t seem to have paid off with the Wolves struggling for consistency in 2022 under new head coach Daryl Powell.

Powell has called for his senior players to stand up, whilst the former Castleford Tigers boss has one on a recruitment spree in a bid to improve the club’s chances in 2023.

Thomas Mikaele, Gil Dudson and Sam Kasiano have already committed to the Cheshire club for 2023 and beyond, whilst Matt Dufty is still being heavily linked with a move to the Halliwell Jones Stadium from Down Under.

However, it appears as though there will be a big rebuild heading into the next era under Powell and whether or not Widdop fits into those plans remains to be seen.

Though showing glimpses of his talent, the England international has blown hot and cold, but it’s a tough choice for Powell and one which will certainly have repercussions.

That being said, Widdop is now reportedly being hunted by a Super League rival with Castleford said to be the club in question.
