Super League prop joins Championship club

Sheffield Eagles have signed former Academy star Eddie Battye from fellow Championship outfit Wakefield Trinity on a two-year deal.

Battye, since coming through the Eagles ranks in the early 2010s, has enjoyed spells with London Broncos and Wakefield but he’s decided now is the right time to return to South Yorkshire.

Director of Rugby Mark Aston commented: “Once we knew of Eddie’s availability, we did all we could to bring him back to Sheffield,”

“We’re exceptionally proud of all he has achieved in becoming a Super League regular so to get a man of his calibre says a lot about what we’re doing and where we’re going. He’ll bring a lot to the table, not just on the pitch but off the pitch too.”

This comes after the arrival of former Wigan Warriors and Newcastle Thunder prop Mitch Clark. Clark has been in and around the Championship for a number of years, having previously played for Bradford Bulls, Featherstone Rovers and Doncaster amongst dual-registration/loan spells with others.

Known for his destructive carries and a talented offloading game, the Kiwi – son of former Bradford and Featherstone player Trevor Clark – will be wanting to hit the ground running in the Steel City.

Director of Rugby Mark Aston commented: “We’re happy to be bringing Mitch on board. He can really bring something to the team, some power into the pack that is much needed across the course of a season.

“He’s good friends with the likes of Jesse and QLT so he’ll fit into the group seamlessly.”

The club have also extended the stay of Joel Farrell at the club until 2025. Now approaching 100 appearances in Red and Gold (currently on 92), Farrell’s no-nonsense style of play will remain as he continues to become a leader in the pack.

Director of Rugby Mark Aston said of Farrell: “You know what you’re going to get from Joel,”

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and we never want that to change.

“He has been a big part of the pack since coming to the club and he has a big part to play for Sheffield Eagles going forward.

“Joel has also had to play at hooker during 2023 and we’re happy with his contribution from that spot.

“We know his preferred position is in the second-row and we’ll see more of him in that spot next year.
