Super League player reveals “privilege” of being granted new shirt number

With pre-season well underway most teams have announced their 2023 shirt numbers and one of the latest to do so were Huddersfield Giants with players reacting to the awarding of certain shirt numbers.

One of those players was prop forward Joe Greenwood who has been rewarded for his performances last season, making 24 of the possible 27 appearances and impressing head coach Ian Watson in the process.

As a result Greenwood has moved from 15 to number 10 and he spoke to GiantsTV about the switch in a video the Giants shared to their Twitter.

“Obviously the 10 shirt is in the starting 13 but it’s not like that, you have to earn your spot but it’s a privilege to be recognised and get that starting 13 number.”

Greenwood is heading into his third season with the club and the 29-year-old former St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos man has clearly impressed but he was keen to downplay the significance of the number and instead focus on pre-season.

“At the end of the day no position is guaranteed and you have to be performing and to me it’s great to have the number 10 but you still have to perform as well.

“To me nothing changes and just carry on as normal.”

Greenwood will carry on as normal in a front row that will feature fellow prop Chris Hill and hooker Nathan Peats who has signed from Toulouse.

Huddersfield are one of only two teams that won’t feature in round one as their game against St Helens will be rescheduled on account of the champions heading down under for the World Club Challenge.

Fans will be able to see Greenwood in action soon though during pre-season with the Giants travelling to Odsal to face Bradford Bulls on January 22nd.
