Super League club appeal controversial suspension

Super League club Salford Red Devils have already confirmed that they will be appealing King Vuniyayawa’s ban ahead of their Round One clash against Leeds Rhinos – his former club.

In the disciplinary, we saw five Super League players charged. Warrington Wolves duo Connor Wrench and Brad Dwyer were both charged for Head Contact with Wrench with Grade D and Dwyer with Grade B. However, neither player was banned or fined due to the amnesty about the new Head Contact rules.

The same went for Vuniyayawa’s teammate Finley Yates after the clash with St Helens.

However, Huddersfield Giants star Luke Yates wasn’t so lucky being banned for three games as the Giants see a fourth player punished in pre-season after Oliver Wilson, Leroy Cudjoe and Tui Lolohea.

Lolohea, like Yates, will miss Round One but Wilson and Cudjoe are available. Former Hull KR and Warrington centre Greg Minikin was also banned for Featherstone Rovers.

But so far it is only Vuniyayawa appealing with the club confirming in the following statement: “Following review, we can confirm that the club is appealing the suspension issued to King Vuniyayawa by the Match Review Panel.

“The prop has been handed a one-match ban for Grade B ‘Dangerous Contact’ following a collision during our pre-season friendly against St Helens.”

Salford Red Devils have also announce a partnership with Eccles Sixth Form College, part of Salford City College Group, strengthening the ties between sports and education in the local community.

Building on the success of the collaboration between the College and Salford Red Devils Foundation Development Academy, the club’s Elite Academy – currently in the process of seeking full Academy status with the Rugby Football League – will now have its players attend Eccles Sixth Form College from September 2024.

This new partnership reflects the commitment of both organisations to the holistic development of young athletes, combining educational excellence with sports prowess. By providing a platform for aspiring rugby talents to seamlessly integrate their education and athletic ambitions, this relationship aims to shape well-rounded individuals ready to excel both on and off the field.

Chris Irwin, Red Devils Chief Commercial Officer, expressed his delight about the partnership: “This collaboration represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to create a comprehensive development pathway for young talent. By joining forces with Salford City College Group, we are ensuring that our Elite Academy players receive the best possible support in their academic pursuits, complementing their athletic journey.”
