“Cheating” – Sky Sports pundit accuses Warrington Wolves of “cheating” in key try

Matt Dufty scores a try.for Warrington Wolves

Sky Sports pundits Jon Wilkin and Paul Cooke have assessed the winning try scored by Warrington Wolves to secure the win over Hull KR in Round Four of the Betfred Super League.

The Robins were leading 20-18 until Matt Dufty darted over from a scrum play to secure a 22-20 win,

Jon Wilkin began the assessment of the try and said Hull KR should have “cheated” and broken out of the scrum earlier to stop the try.

He said: “Yeah, John Wells called five Warrington players on three Hull KR players. It was an excellent run by Matt Dufty. He was hidden and his speed is what creates this.

“But Hull KR can defend this better. You need more push out the scrum. So your second row is not even broken. You’ve got to cheat, Brian! So you’ve got to cheat. Yeah, they have got to get out the scrum earlier.”

This led to Paul Cooke highlighting that Warrington stole the edge here by cheating themselves with Paul Vaughan clinging onto an opposition player’s shirt in the scrum.

Cooke said: “Paul Vaughan’s cheating. Paul Vaughan’s cheating. He’s holding on to the shirt. They’ve got to get out of the scrum quicker.”

Hull KR problem emerges in Warrington Wolves try

Peta Hiku playing for Hull KR against Leeds Rhinos

As Wilkin continued to assess the try, he highlighted the interchanging positions of the Hull KR backs Peta Hiku and Niall Evalds as a key weakness in this try.

He said: “It’s a delightful play from Warrington. I’ve got to admit and you’re right, it’s five on three. But Hull KR can defend that better and they can get out of the scrum quicker.

“And also Peta Hiku is at fullback playing at centre at that stage and he’s not been in that position all year so again it speaks to Hull KR moving somebody who they’re not quite sure with Niall Evalds and him running a little bit and it was like a merry-go-round who’s at fullback and who’s not.

“Well I think that cost him on that play because you need to be really quick on your feet to be able to two touch a guy in your inside and then go to the outside and he just couldn’t do it and Duffy was too good. Williams was too good and they just iced that play.”
