“Nowhere near” – Hull KR boss addresses defeat to Leeds Rhinos

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters

Despite losing to Leeds Rhinos ahead of the new Super League season, Hull KR boss Willie Peters was pleased with his side’s efforts and where they are ahead of their Round One derby clash with Hull FC.

He was mostly pleased for how his side got minutes into their legs preparing them for the season to come.

On the performance against the Rhinos, Peters said: “Yeah look from a minutes perspective we certainly did. I think we’ve got you know that first stint we had our front rowers, our props, Dean Hadley and Jai playing 30 minutes so we wanted those guys to do that. We want to have those you know if they’re starting round one doing what they did today and I thought they set a really good platform there, working hard and they got us on the front foot. So they did a really good job, which I was happy with for 30 minutes.

“And then off the back of that, I suppose, because we had, you know, we’re not still not sure in terms of the makeup of the rest of our middles. So we wanted to give time to all of them. And obviously we gave time to our younger guys as well. So from a minutes perspective, yeah, I mean, we got, I think Petter played about 55 and Tyrone was meant to come off. So, yeah, overall I think we got individual minutes that we wanted.”

Peters also addressed what he felt went wrong for his side: “Performance wise, it was sort of, I just said to the players then, it was, you know, I always talk about having your best and worst performance is not too far away. It certainly wasn’t our best performance in the first half but it was, you know, we were on track, we built a lot of pressure. You know, there was probably one pass there, we’d score, you know, if it goes to him we’d score another two or three tries but we’re happy with what we did and the pressure we built.

“Then we came out in the second half and we were a different team. We played flat, we lacked energy, so for me that says that we’re not, you know, it’s a friendly game but we’re not anywhere near where we want to be.”
