Hull FC thrashed by Wigan Warriors ahead of new season

As preparations get more serious ahead of the Super League season, Super League Champions Wigan Warriors headed over to Hull FC to celebrate Scott Taylor.

The former Hull FC, Hull KR and Wigan Warriors prop has retired but has since been awarded a testimonial.

This match, though important to both side’s preparations for the new season, doubled as his big day as he made one last appearance against his former side.

Wigan named a very strong side with Liam Marshall sadly absent after the passing of his mother. Abbas Miski was the other big name in the backs absent.

Hull FC named Jack Walker at fullback as fellow 2024 signing Fa’amanu Brown started at seven. This allowed Tex Hoy to start at six in the absence of Jake Trueman.

Hull FC started strongly putting Wigan under pressure near their own line a number of times but as you would expect from the Champions, they stood their ground to keep it at 0-0.

In fact, it remained 0-0 for the entire first quarter before Wigan broke the deadlock. The Super League Champions scored via a familiar and effective partnership with a kick from Harry Smith collected by Jake Wardle to score.

The Warriors continued to hold onto their slender break with some good defence especially from Harvie Hill. It remained 6-0 at halftime.

Unlike in the first half, it only took six minutes for the scoring to start in the second half with Patrick Mago making it 10-0. He burst through the line before dummying his way over. Harry Smith again converted and it was 12-0.

Two minutes later and Wigan led 16-0 and typically it was Bevan French who scored. He darted over after collecting a loose ball. Another conversion from Smith made it 18-0.

After showing more impressive defence, the Warriors added to their lead. After a lovely move, Smith’s short ball sent Tyler Dupree over to make it 24-0.

Wigan kept the tries coming even after substitutions with Douglas, Farrimond and Hampshire all scoring to make it 40-0.
