Leigh Centurions miss out on NRL winger

Leigh Centurions have missed out on the signing of Nene Macdonald.

The winger was heavily rumoured with a move to the Leigh Sports Village earlier in the year as Leigh owner Derek Beaumont tried desperately to salvage their maiden Super League season.

However, Macdonald took on a deal with the Norths Devils in the Intrust Super Cup instead.

The 27-year-old has experienced the NRL with the Roosters, Titans, Dragons, Cowboys and Sharks and now has the chance to make it sixth time a charm with the Brisbane Broncos on a train and trial contract.

A PNG international, the winger/centre has notched up 35 tries in almost 100 NRL games and so would be a welcome addition to a Brisbane outfit that struggled comprehensively in 2021.

Leigh, meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere to bolster their squad following their relegation from Super League.

Beaumont and new head of rugby Chris Chester have gone to great lengths to build their squad fit for another tilt at the top flight, with the likes of Joe Wardle, Jy Hitchcox and Tom Nisbet all moving to the Leigh Sports Village.
