Hull FC make a surprising appointment in the academy

Hull FC have confirmed that Darren Downs has joined the club in the role of Leadership & Wellbeing Manager at the Centre of Excellence.

Downs previously held senior roles with Humberside Police, such as Chief Superintendent and Chief Inspector.

The development of youth players off the field is just as integral as it is on the field in modern day society, and Downs will work with the Black & Whites’ Academy and Scholarship players to enhance their holistic development.

In addition, Downs will also link up with Hull FC’s junior coaches to help them hone their leadership traits when delivering sessions to youngsters.

With experience of leading large departments during his time as Chief Inspector at Humberside Police, youngsters coming through the Black & Whites’ burgeoning Centre of Excellence will benefit from Downs’ support and advice on how to become a strong leader.

He will also work with the youngsters on outlining each individual’s ambitions for the 2023 season, drawing up a 2-3 year plan for each player to give them a clear pathway moving forwards.

Downs also has a personal affinity with the Airlie Birds, as his eldest son, Jack, played 19 times for Hull FC between 2015 and 2018.

Hull FC Head of Youth Pete Riding added: “I’m absolutely over the moon to welcome Darren back to the club.

“His appointment is a really significant one and one that will enhance the learning experience of every player in our youth system.”
