Former Man of Steel makes Huddersfield union switch

Huddersfield Giants legend and former Man of Steel Danny Brough has been appointed head coach of rugby union side Huddersfield RUFC

He joined them as a defence coach in late February and seemed to bring immediate change to the side, with improved performances against sides from Sheffield, Fylde and Rotherham.

The club’s head of rugby said: “Danny has got Huddersfield and rugby in his veins and will demand high standards. We’re looking to ensure that rugby players in Huddersfield want to play for HRUFC.

“They have lots of options in both codes and we want to create an environment to retain our junior players and attract local talent.

“HRUFC is a great place to play rugby. We have a thriving junior section, amazing people, great facilities and a beautiful setting in which to enjoy the game.”

Huddersfield RUFC play in rugby union’s National 2 North league, at tier four of the system.

Brough started his career at Dewsbury Rams, and went on to make hundreds of Super League appearances for sides such as Wakefield and Hull FC, and particularly Huddersfield Giants.

He made 247 appearances for the Giants.

With Hull FC, he won the Challenge Cup in 2005.

He also won the League Leaders’ Shield in 2013.

Individually, he won Man of Steel in 2013, was named in Super League Team of the Season in 2013 and 2015, and won three Albert Goldthorpe Medals.
