Former Hull FC star returns to former club ahead of 2024

Former Hull FC star Will Smith has returned to former club the Western Suburbs for the 2024 season after leaving Wests Tigers.

Smith was drafted in as an emergency signing at the end of 2022 and did a terrific job for the Black and Whites throughout the season.

There was speculation and hope he would stay at the club but at the end of 2022 he left to join Wests Tigers as the Black and Whites brought in Tex Hoy and Jake Clifford.

Now, after a stint at Wests Tigers, he has returned to his junior club Western Suburbs where he will link up with former St Helens and Catalans Dragons star Luke Walsh.

When he signed for Hull FC in 2022, he was delighted at the opportunity and it is a shame he didn’t stay.

Walsh said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to get back playing some footy at a high level and to try and help Hull FC get to the semi-finals.

“My priority recently had to be my family, but they understand my desire to get back playing and they have given me their blessing to head to Super League for the next few months.

“I have heard very good things about the club and the people there, I know both Manu and Kane very well, so I’m looking forward to lining up with those guys again and doing my bit for the team.

“It’s a talented group of players at Hull, they’ve been doing it really tough recently but hopefully I can bring something to the group and when we get a few more players back on the field we can have a real push for the finals.”

The Indigenous All Stars representative plays in the halves, full back and at hooker and also offers utility value in the outside backs.

Smith brings a wealth of NRL experience to his old club having made 84 first-grade appearances since 2014, running out for Penrith Panthers, Paramatta Eels and the Titans before his latest stint at Wests Tigers.

He proudly became only the second ever Indigenous player to captain the Eels in 2021. He was a regular at Gold Coast playing stand-off and hooker before he had to leave the club on compassionate leave which was when he made the move to Hull FC.
