Ex-Leeds Rhinos boss David Furner steps in to help struggling club

Former Leeds Rhinos head coach David Furner has stepped in to help a struggling club.

Furner, who lost his job at Headingley in 2019 after a run of bad results, has taken control of the Canterbury Bulldogs team for this weekend’s fixture with Wests Tigers.

Alongside Furner, former Hull KR boss Craig Sandercock will also help prepare the side as former Bradford Bulls boss Mick Potter will take over the reins at Belmore for the rest of the season.

Furner was sacked by Leeds after ten losses in 14 games at the club back in 2019 with Richard Agar taking over with the club third from bottom of the Super League.

Following that departure, Furner moved back home to Australia and has since been part of Trent Barrett’s coaching staff at Canterbury.

St Helens head coach Kristian Woolf has been linked with a move to the Bulldogs for 2023.

“The name Kristian Woolf keeps coming up to me, he’s been in the UK Super League and he’s the coach of Tonga,” Daily Telegraph journalist Dave Riccio said.

“As for Shane Flanagan, I think that’s a bridge too far considering (his son) Kyle is there.

“Paul Green’s the other one sitting in the background waiting for a job. Would he come in and take care of the Bulldogs?”
