Derek Beaumont calls out the disparity between plaudits in union and league after impossible try

Josh Charnley is in red hot form at the moment and he produced an acrobatic finish on Saturday to open the scoring against Salford Red Devils.

It came from a lovely pass from Lachlan Lam which gave the winger just enough space to dart down the line and squeeze in with an acrobatic finish.

The try continues his scintillating form to start the season as he chases down Danny McGuire’s record for Super League tries.

This score also made him 2023’s top scorer but it would pale in comparison to his second try of the game which was simply impossible

This was a try that looked certain to be disallowed but as the video referee reviewed the try it showed that after kicking the ball, he was able to get back in field and ground the ball. A magic moment that saw him defy the odds to ground the ball after coming back in field.

An amazing finish with skill and composure and as aforementioned it was almost impossible

One fan tweeted that if it was scored in rugby union that people would be talking about it for weeks and Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont agreed saying that if it had been in union BBC Sport would be tweeting it:

“Absolutely and the BBC Sport Twitter page would be tweeting it like mad [if it was in rugby union]!

“The best action and finishes are without doubt within the Super League and the Championship.”

Sky Sports of course did share the try as they own the rights to the live games.
