Castleford Tigers coach surprisingly departs

Dewsbury Rams have today announced that former Great Britain player and Wakefield Coach Tony Smith has joined the club as Assistant Coach.

Tony Smith who had a long and illustrious playing career for the likes of Castleford, Wigan and Hull FC joins the club on a deal until the end of the 2023 season. Smith played at scrum-half for Wigan in their 1998 Super League Grand Final victory and also played at international level representing both Great Britain and England, the latter in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup Final and at the 2000 World Cup.

Smith also has a wealth of coaching experience, having coached Wakefield Trinity in the mid-2000’s and has been the Head Coach of the Castleford Tigers Academy for the past eight years.

Speaking on his appointment to the role, Smith said “As soon as I knew Finny was on the lookout for an Assistant I was interested, I coached Liam when he was first starting out at Wakefield and he’s a proper student of the game. He’s new to coaching and I’m hoping that my experience can help us and get us where we need to be.”

Rams Head Coach Liam Finn added “It’s very exciting to have him with us, he’s very experienced and I’ve worked with him before earlier in my career. He’s a big capture for the club and will work well to develop the players.”
