Sam Walters made a real impression at Leeds Rhinos last year becoming a regular player for the club in a new position as he transitioned into the front row.
He played a key role for the Rhinos as they made the Grand Final, but was frequently coming off the bench and in 2023 he is determined to cement himself as a regular player for the Rhinos in 2023:
“I want to be one of the first names on the team sheet. When it got down to the wire in the play-off games, I only got limited minutes and I want to change that this year.”
The Rhinos have signed a number of forwards for the new season, but Walters is keen to offer something different:
“All great players, I think I can offer something different, I read the game a bit different. I also have a good offload on the back of a strong run.”
Back in the firing line today against Wakefield Trinity, he was glad to be back:
“It’s good to be back, blow away the cobwebs and get those combinations going that we’ve worked on in pre-season.”
He also explained his stance on positions:
“I think I play wherever the team needs me to play and where Rohan wants me to play. I still see myself as a backrow, I will probably play prop for the majority of next season but I want to show that I can still do a good job at backrow.
“If I play as a middle, I want to play long stints, I have a good engine at the moment and I want to show I can play a lot of minutes.”
