Transfer news: Huddersfield Giants speak out on Warrington Wolves-linked player

Huddersfield Giants' Luke Yates

Huddersfield Giants are in the hunt for a play-off spot after nine games of the Super League season. Huddersfield suffered a heart-breaking, last minute defeat against St Helens last weekend. But, they are just two points behind sixth place Salford Red Devils.

The Giants face the Red Devils in a crucial clash this weekend. The build up to the game has been overshadowed by speculation. Reports have emerged that one of their star players could leave the club.

Now, a member of Huddersfield’s coaching staff has addressed the rumours that one of their key men may be on the verge of leaving the club.

Huddersfield Giants captain linked with move to rivals

Luke Yates joined the Giants from Salford in 2021. The Giants reportedly paid a significant transfer fee to secure his services. He has become a key part of Huddersfield’s side, and became captain ahead of the 2022 season. Yates’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and he is now linked with a move away from the club. Warrington Wolves are reportedly in pole position to secure his signature.

Huddersfield assistant coach, Luke Robinson, has now addressed these rumours. Robinson believes Yates is an exceptional player. According to Robinson, his ability makes it inevitable that he is linked with a move away.

“He’s an exceptional player isn’t he? He’s not only a really good player, but I think he’s a really good bloke” Yates said.

“This is what normally happens at this time of year. Obviously, good players will get linked to other clubs, unfortunately, when your contract’s up. I wouldn’t expect anything else.”

“Somebody with his quality, his personality, the way he goes about his business, I expect people to be coming in for him making a play for him, which is understandable.

Robinson explained that the decision on his contract is now subject to a conversation between Yates, Huddersfield coach, Ian Watson, and the board.

“It would obviously be great for us if he stays, and I suppose it’s probably is more of conversation for the gaffer and the board and see where he’s at with that.”

Giants will do everything in their power to keep Yates

However, Robinson believes that the club will do everything in their power to keep Yates. He in an important part of their side and helps set high standards at the Giants. Robinson stated he would be extremely disappointed to see Yates depart.

“I think we will do. I think we’ll try everything in our power to keep him” Yates stated.

“The boys understand what he brings. Every single week he brings 100% effort, not only in games but in training. He trains the house down, he plays in that manner as well.

“He’s a really important part of our squad and our team. Obviously, we’d love to have him stay. I’d be gutted if he went. He’s a really important part of our squad and our team and obviously we’d love to have him stay.

Yates concluded, “Unfortunately, that’s rugby so we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.”
