World Cup winner and NRL star available to Super League clubs

Hull KR have done some of the best and most exciting transfer business ahead of the 2024 Super League season.

The Robins have drafted in Castleford Tigers fullback Niall Evalds as well as further reinforcements in the backs such as the arrival of former Warrington Wolves centre Peta Hiku from North Queensland Cowboys as well as former Wigan Warriors star Oliver Gildart who played against Hull KR at Wembley in the Challenge Cup Final for Leigh Leopards.

They have also signed Super League Grand Finalist Tyrone May from Catalans Dragons whilst there have been reinforcements in the pack especially from Wakefield Trinity. The Robins have signed Jai Whitbread allowing Rhys Kennedy to join London Broncos. Meanwhile, the retirement of Kane Linnett led to the signing of Kelepi Tanginoa from Wakefield as well.

But the Robins nearly made a different signing in the pack and one of the biggest in Super League history. This is because they nearly signed Australia and Tonga international and NRL star Tyson Frizell.

The 2017 World Cup winner was close to signing for the club in 2024 but will be certainly be available to Super League clubs for 2025. This is because he is out of contract and free to negotiate with Super League clubs over a move ahead of 2025.

At 32, he is coming towards the end of his career and is the age where NRL stars often look to make the move over to the UK like Paul Vaughan, Trent Mirren and Matt Prior all of whom have had success.

It will be interesting to see if Hull KR maintain their interest. It would be yet another statement signing for the club who are making big signings left, right and centre at the moment as they look to establish themselves as a top tier side. They have already been given a Grade A status from IMG which displays the club’s growing stature.

The Robins won’t be the only Super League club who will be interested. The Catalans Dragons are also likely to be interested in the Tongan international who is currently at Newcastle Knights but his contract is coming to an end.
