Wigan Warriors win reserves Grand Final against Wakefield Trinity as both include Super League experience including Leeds Rhinos signing

Though Wigan won’t be contesting the Super League Grand Final, many of their younger first team players got to win a Grand Final this afternoon as they defeated Wakefield Trinity in the reserves Grand Final.

Wigan had the likes of Umyla Hanley, Sam Halsall and Leeds bound James McDonnell who has impressed in 2022 on loan at Leigh after scoring Wigan’s try of the season in 2021.

Despite the win he didn’t have the best of days receiving a first half yellow card.

They also included the likes of Alex Sutton and Logan Astley who made their debuts this year. Astley got a try as Wigan romped to victory after Ben O’Keefe had scored a first half hat-trick having also made his Super League debut recently away at Hull KR where he also showed his goal kicking prowess.

Wakefield also had some Super League experience in their side such as Lee Kershaw as well as former Warrington man Rob Butler.

That counted for little though today at they were beaten 40-12 after O’Keefe scored a first half hat trick.

He scored 14 of Wigan’s 18 first half points as they held an 18-6 lead at the break. In fact he scored 20 of Wigan’s point on a great afternoon for the youngster.

In the second half he was helped along by a brace from highly rated youngster Sam Halsall who showed incoming Toby King and the rumoured arrival of Dean Whare what they’ll have to fight against to keep their centre spots.

Alex Sutton and Logan Astley also added tries after Wakefield had trimmed the lead down to six after 51 minutes.

They helped wrap up a great win that shows the wider potential in Matt Peet’s project at the DW Stadium.
