Wigan Warriors pencilled in for friendly to celebrate Super League legend’s career

Wigan Warriors

Wakefield Trinity have confirmed that they will take on Wigan Warriors in Matty Ashurst’s testimonial game.

Born in Wigan, it makes sense that Ashurst’s career should be celebrated against the Super League Champions despite the fact he never played for them, though he did play for their greatest rivals St Helens registering 60 appearances between 2009 and 2011 before joining Salford Red Devils.

He is now entering his 10th season with Wakefield however after joining the club in 2015.

The game will take place on Friday 26th January as Wakefield prepare to battle for Super League promotion and Wigan prepare for the defence of their title, as well as a clash with Penrith Panthers for the World Club Challenge.

Wakefield are set for a big year it feels after some impressive signings and the appointment of Daryl Powell, and the club were excited to announce this marquee friendly.

The club was also excited to announce the 2024 Betfred Championship fixtures last week. With a total of 10 weekend fixtures and 3 Friday night games in what promises to be an exhilarating season.

The campaign will kick off with a bang on Friday the 15th March with a spectacular pyrotechnic and light show to officially open the new Neil Fox East stand and begin the new era under Daryl Powell.

New owner Matt Ellis said: “Our priority was to get as many Sunday fixtures as possible into the list as the club felt that this was the most popular fixture day. We have received numerous requests from supporters who cannot make Sunday fixtures due to work or other commitments.

“We hope to have catered for these supporters with two further Friday night fixtures being added to the list throughout the campaign. The final league fixture of the season has been selected for a Saturday evening game.

“Should we achieve all we are hoping for in the coming season this game could well be played with a party atmosphere where we can all celebrate a successful season achieved with perhaps the odd drink consumed.

“We hope we have catered for all with the fixture list and we can make this season an epic one for everyone involved at Wakefield Trinity.”
