Where to for Corey Oates?

Off-contract Brisbane Broncos winger Corey Oates has been adamant over the past couple of months that the club had promised he would be offered a new contract in the near future, however to this point Corey Oates remains unsigned and as the days go by looks more likely to become a free agent on November 1st.

It also doesn’t help Oates that the Broncos are seemingly going to conduct a clean out of their roster, and Corey Oates has been named as a player who could be moved on to free up cap space to re-sign David Fifita Jr.

However, it’s crazy that we’ve heard minimal rumours of teams trying to poach Oates from the Broncos, especially considering the amazing form he hit in 2019, before the Milford and Boyd positional switch hindered the ball he was getting.

With Oates scoring 13 tries in 22 games in 2019 and at only 24 years of age, the winger still has plenty to offer any NRL club.

One club that could desperately use the 24 year old are the North Queensland Cowboys.

The Cowboys have lacked star power in their back 5 and have so far signed Esan Masters from the Tigers to play in the centres, however still need another winger and Corey Oates would be the perfect fit.

In only 16 appearances in 2019, current Cowboys winger scored 11 tries, now add that to Corey Oates’ 13 and thats 24 tries in a 24 game season where the two players didn’t even play a full season!

Pairing Feldt and Oates together at the Cowboys, considering they play every game during the regular season, could produce around 30 tries or more as a pairing alone in 2020!

If I’m the Cowboys I’m offering Corey Oates a deal yesterday, and if I’m Corey Oates, I’m going for a road trip north to see what I’m offered.
