What the best Super League table would look like if teams owned their stadium

Super League has had an age old debate about new stadia in a modern age.

But, for some of those teams that are still at old grounds, they can boast that they own those venues.

Well, one very interested rugby league fan put together his own Super League table of teams that own their stadium in the league positions that they would fall in. Of course, the person has included Catalans Dragons when the title says ‘UK Rugby league teams’, but we will leave the French side in.

Newcastle Thunder also addressed the fact that they are involved with Newcastle Rugby – an organisation that owns the Kingston Park ground – so they can be included too.

The table would read:

1 St Helens
2 Catalans Dragons
3 Castleford Tigers
4 Hull KR
5 Leeds Rhinos
6 Warrington Wolves
7 Wakefield Trinity
8 Featherstone Rovers
9 Batley Bulldogs
10 Barrow Raiders
11 Newcastle Thunder
12 Whitehaven

What is interesting from that list above is that five Super League teams are not included – Huddersfield Giants, Wigan Warriors, Hull FC, Toulouse Olympique and Salford Red Devils – either because they are owned by a football team or the council.

For Wakefield and Castleford, their stadia have come under fire in recent years for their dilapidated nature and both have now started the process in redeveloping their own grounds rather than moving out and building another.

In fact, Trinity have begun demolishing their East Stand in recent weeks whilst the Tigers are waiting to get the ball rolling in terms of concrete movement.

Saints, of course, own the Totally Wicked Stadium and is one of the most impressive modern facilities in the top flight – as is Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Leeds have redeveloped Headingley into a tremendous venue, pulling the club into the modern era whilst still retaining the brilliant atmosphere of the old South Stand. And, the same can be said of Hull KR with Craven Park.

Catalans are a success story, too, with the Stade Gilbert Brutus an impressive modern facility with a superb atmosphere.
