Warrington Wolves suffer major blow

Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves are facing a real injury problem as the start of the season unfolds.

The Wolves have won three games on the run after defeat in Round One against Catalans Dragons but they have injury problems in the halves.

George Williams is managing an ankle problem and Sam Burgess confirmed that his halfback partner faces three or four weeks on the sidelines as he joked that the halfback was “delicate.”

This very much fed into the discussion around the Wolves and their chances of doing something big in 2024 under the leadership of Sam Burgess.

The Wolves have had to play young Leon Hayes in their three wins but if Williams’ injury reoccurs with the halfback saying after the game on Sky Sports that he has a “dodgy ankle” the problem would only become bigger.

It does raise a question however, what happens when all three players are fit to feature for the Wolves?

Leon Hayes is really underlining his place in the side and his amazing future at Warrington.

Warrington Wolves not “delicate”

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess

Warrington Wolves were anything but delicate as they showed great resilience to defeat Hull KR who were heavily fancied for the game.

Going in at the half leading 18-12, the Robins put it on Warrington Wolves in the second period and scored two quickfire tries to take the lead, however, Warrington rallied and came back to secure the win.

The resilience shown marked a change in what has been seen from Warrington sides in past years, something that Paul Cooke and Jon Wilkin had alluded to pre-match when they detailed what Sam Burgess must do to achieve success.

“I think it’s really interesting that word used there of ‘delicate’. I think that can be said about the whole team and the whole club over the years,” Paul Cooke told Brian Carney on Sky Sports’ live coverage.

“When it goes wrong, it goes catastrophically wrong for them. It’s like everybody’s really delicate and fragile within their group.”

They certainly didn’t show any signs of fragility as they rebuffed a strong Hull KR side in order to secure their third win in a row.
