Warrington Wolves 12-16 Wakefield Trinity: Highlights, player ratings & talking points

Warrington Wolves took on Wakefield Trinity in the Challenge Cup Sixth Round today in what was a rematch of last week’s Super League fixture.

That ended in a Wakefield victory, 38-22 and Trinity were in incredible form once more as they overcame Warrington by 16-12.

Down 12-0 in the opening exchanges, Wakefield produced a superb comeback to score 16 unanswered points.

Highlights

Warrington’s first try was a beauty involving a Gareth Widdop break and a superb kick to the chasing Connor Wrench.

Lewis Murphy scored his first professional try for Wakefield Trinity on the back of great hands.

Wakefield’s third try was incredible with Max Jowitt breaking and feeding Corey Hall for a brilliant score.

Talking points

1. Controversy

Late on in the first-half, Wakefield Trinity were attacking strongly with Liam Kay’s kick causing all sorts of problems in the Warrington defence. Kelepi Tanginoa was chasing hard, only to be pulled back by Josh Thewlis. Referee Jack Smith, however, declined to look at the video referee and Trinity went into the break 12-6 down when it should have been 12-12.

2. Mason Lino keeps getting better

The Wakefield halfback has been instrumental for the West Yorkshire side recently and had yet another stellar game. Whenever he gets the ball, Lino looks as though he will create something and was a constant thorn in the Wolves’ side all afternoon.

3. What is going wrong at Warrington?

It was Warrington’s fourth loss in a row with a number of dismal performances along the way, so what is going wrong at Warrington? They were shocked by Wakefield once more and Mason Lino ran rings around George Williams yet again.
