Unexpected England star reveals how he’s ‘fighting’ for club record

There’s some immense records in rugby league with some seemingly unbeatable, such as James Roby and his unbelievable tally of appearances for St Helens, whilst others such as Danny McGuire’s Super League try scoring record (247) is close to being cracked by former Leeds Rhinos teammate Ryan Hall (237).

Most will agree that records are there to be broken and that’s certainly the mentality of England winger Dom Young who is in in line to break the record for tries in a season for current club Newcastle Knights.

Young was an unknown to many rugby league fans heading into the World Cup last year but nine tries in the group stages for the then 21-year-old caught the attention of all England fans, and had many asking why would Huddersfield Giants have ever let him go?

At six foot seven inches Young is a physical winger with his aerial threat being obvious and his speed adding to his game but Huddersfield allowed him to leave at the end of 2020, with Young making Newcastle his new home.

The 2022 season saw him hit double figure tries and earn his call up for Shaun Wane’s side but this current season he has eclipsed that and now sits on 21 tries for the Knights, sharing the club record for most tries in a season.

With just one game to go of the regular season Young has revealed how the rivalry with fellow winger Greg Marzhew has fuelled his incredible season.

“It feels good to get it (the record-equaller), hopefully one more game I can break it,” Young told the Canberra Times.

The Knights have won eight on the spin to confirm their playoff place and during that period Marzhew has begun to catch up with Young, currently sitting on 19 tries and just two shy of the Englishman.

“He’s coming home strong so who knows? We’ll fight for that record,” Young commented on his teammate, “It’s getting close.”

“He’s telling me he’s going to get a try, well that makes me want to get one, I thought I was in the clear but a hat-trick (in round 25) definitely pushed him a bit closer.

“It’s healthy competition, it’s all fun and games really at the end of the day.

“He’s been massive this year so it’s definitely made me want to own my job as well and my role in the team.”

Whilst Young is gunning for the club record he’s also just two tries shy of the league lead for the most tries in the current season, the Dolphins Jamayne Isaako sitting on 23 at the moment.

The Knights have a favourable matchup against 16th placed St George Illawarra Dragons whilst the Dolphins face a New Zealand Warriors side who are competing for a second placed finish.

Young’s acheivements will give England fans plenty to be excited about anyway and his future club, Sydney Roosters, will be licking their lips too.
