Two Super League clubs interested in signing Wakefield Trinity star

Wakefield Trinity centre Samisoni Langi’s future is up in the air at present.

The former Catalans Dragons centre who can represent both Tonga and France at international level has left Wakefield Trinity and there have been conflicting reports about what will happen to the versatile centre next.

There has been a suggestion he will retire and leave the UK but sources in France have linked him with a move back to Super League.

Sources in France responded to the news that he was a free agent by linking him with a move to either St Helens or Salford Red Devils.

They reported: “Two clubs with very different situations and objectives as they are St Helens and Salford. On the one hand, a Super League giant, accustomed to the finals although eliminated last season by the cruelty of Gilbert Brutus and his king Sam Tomkins.

“On the other hand, the Red Devils also intend to lure the former Catalan centre. Unfortunately, the situation is very different on the Salford side. The club is facing major financial problems and has been forced to part ways with many key players such as Andy Ackers, Brodie Croft or Tyler Dupree.

“On the other hand, a very meagre transfer window, conditioned by the club’s financial crisis but in which Samisoni Langi, 30, could well be a part. After 32-year-old Joe Mellor, these are two recruits who, due to their age, could combine performance, experience and low prices. Enough to perhaps save the Red Devils from the complicated season that awaits them in 2024.”

Both clubs have quota spots and both clubs are in the market for outside backs so you could understand why both clubs would monitor his situation very closely.

His former club Catalans Dragons are unlikely to make a play for him. At present, all their quota spots have been taken and though they are exploring their options of opening up one to add to their squad, Langi is an unlikely target with the spine and pack more pressing areas of recruitment for the French club as they look to return to Old Trafford and this time win in 2024.
