Toronto Wolfpack have submitted their application to rejoin Super League in 2021.
The transatlantic outfit withdrew from the 2020 competition in late July due to financial issues and were given a September 2nd deadline by Super League to submit their re-application paperwork for next year.
Press in Canada have confirmed that the Wolfpack met yesterday’s deadline and proposed a new business plan with their prospective new owner (an unidentified Canadian) to Super League and the RFL over video call.
“I thought it went very well, certainly as well as expected,” Chairman Bob Hunter told The Canadian Press.
“We submitted all the documentation. We are now waiting for them to do their due diligence and hopefully we’ll be talking to them again later in the week or next week.”
It’s believed a decision will be made by the end of September with reports suggesting Super League are keen to have a 12-team competition that includes Toronto for the 2021 season.
There will be a number of financial challenges for the club’s proposed new owner to contend with, including a backlog of payments to the club’s playing staff who have not been paid since early June.
The Wolfpack are desperate to receive a share of Super League’s central distribution funding going forward, that will see them cover the club’s £2.1m salary cap.
“It’s been on the table (for some time),” Hunter added. “But certainly for the new owner, it’s a key part of going forward… The team cannot be viable long-term without participation in those central revenues.”
