Transfer news: Former Super League winger Greg Eden signs for new club

Greg Eden

Former Super League winger Greg Eden has found himself a new club after being granted a release from Championship strugglers Halifax Panthers.

The utility back who predominantly plays on the wing or at full-back left Castleford Tigers at the end of the 2023 season to make the switch to the Championship and join Fax. Despite that, he’s already out the door at The Shay after just a few months but it’s not taken him long to find a new club.

Greg Eden had his request to be released granted earlier this week with the Panthers confirming via their website the departure. It read: “Halifax Panthers can confirm that Greg Eden has been released from his contract with immediate effect.

“The 33-year-old winger will depart the club after expressing a desire to play closer to home in this new part-time phase of his career.”

Days later another Championship side are releasing their own statement, this time confirming his arrival though.

Featherstone Rovers sign Greg Eden

Championship side Featherstone Rovers are the team who have swooped in to snag Greg Eden with the Flat confirming that they have bagged the former Cas man on a deal until the end of the season.

It’s a major boost for Featherstone with the experienced player certain to aid their three-quarter line for the remainder of the 2024 Championship campaign.

Featherstone broke the news with a statement released on their club site, that read: “Featherstone Rovers are delighted to announce the signing of Greg Eden with immediate effect until the end of the 2024 campaign.

“Eden joins the club after a spell at Halifax Panthers this season and the prolific tryscorer will add quality to our three-quarter line for the remainder of the 2024 season.

“The former Castleford Tigers, Brisbane Broncos, Hull Kingston Rovers and Huddersfield Giants winger will now call the Millennium Stadium his home after making over 200 appearances at the highest level during his career, notching over 150 tries to boot.”

Eden added: “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge at Featherstone and getting started with the boys.

“The brand of rugby Featherstone play really excites me and I’m keen to get out on the field with my new teammates and put my best foot forward for Featherstone Rovers.”

Rovers Head Coach, James Ford, added: “I’m delighted to bring Greg to the club. He’s been a quality player over a long period of time, scoring and creating plenty of tries.

“I feel that Greg really compliments us and what we are trying to do here and I’m really looking forward to involving him in our 17.”
