Catalans full-back Sam Tomkins believes those at the top should introduce stricter restrictions on player movement when they are away from the game.
Numerous players and clubs have returned positive virus tests since Super League restarted, causing a number of games to be postponed.
With little room for manoeuvre in a hectic fixture schedule over the next 12 weeks, doubts have started to surface over whether the season will finish.
Speaking on Sky Sports Golden Point Vodcast, Tomkins believes Super League needs to adopt a similar approach to the NRL, while also handing out heavy sanctions.
He said: “There is always going to be a risk of people contracting it and day-to-day life has to go on.
“I think there should be more restrictions on players and that should come from the top.
“If you look at the blueprint the NRL have got… they fill out an online wellness report the same as we do every single morning, but they basically get told if you’re not at training or a game then you’re at home.
“If you have to go out to pick up food, you can, but that’s it and you log everywhere you’ve been, and there are heavy sanctions for people who don’t comply to that.
“As players, I think we’ve probably got to sacrifice a little bit more because we all want the same thing.”
Tomkins thoughts have been echoed by Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke who believes a ‘player lockdown’ would go some way to mitigating the virus in Super League.
“I would like to see the game introduce stricter rules,” Clarke said on Sky Sports News.
“Perhaps the players and staff are allowed to go to the training ground, to games and then home.
“That’s possibly the next step we need to go to, to try do all we possibly can to keep the game and the season alive.”
