“To be fair…” – Huddersfield Giants boss highlights “50/50 calls” after defeat

Huddersfield Giants coach Ian Watson is under huge pressure according to Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin.

Huddersfield Giants came up short against Wigan Warriors in Super League Round Three which left the Giants with back to back defeats but to the competition’s two favourites at the start of the year after losing to early leaders St Helens last week.

Speaking to BBC Sport West Yorkshire, Head Coach Ian Watson addressed the defeat saying: “I thought a lot of grit and determination from us especially defensively. The start of the game, we sort of let it get away from us I think.

“There were 19 sets and I think they had 15 of them. If you’re going to keep defending that many sets, you’re going to struggle.

“But I thought the way we responded from that especially with Adam Milner being sin binned as well that we showed really good character.

“We were going set for set with them and we posted pointed on the back of it and we turned it into a decent game but then our errors or lack of skill let us down coming out of yardage to be fair and made it a little bit beyond us.

“We were just letting pressure off the opposition and you can’t let a team like Wigan have opportunities when they have Jai Field and Bevan French. We probably defended too much and sheer fatigue comes in.”

Ian Watson explains why he dropped Huddersfield Giants star

Tui Lolohea will miss both the final pre-season friendly against Castleford and the Super League opener after landing a two-game ban.

In a bit of a surprise, Huddersfield star Tui Lolohea was left out after the return of Jake Connor to the 17 following a head knock in Round One against Leigh Leopards.

Ian Watson explained why the Huddersfield Giants fullback / stand-off didn’t feature: “I thought last week we didn’t score any points and the week before we had more continuity without Tui. So we felt like we needed that continuity. We posted points here today but we just needed to be better early doors.”

Asked what they need to improve on next week against Castleford Tigers, Watson said: “Similar to this week, we need to tidy up our skill and improve our discipline with the ball. There were some 50/50 calls that you think you’re going to get but you’re never going to get them away from home.”
