Super League set for its own streaming service in 2024

Rugby league is set for a lot of change in 2024 and that could come in the shape of a streaming service for the sport.

We already know that every Super League game will be shown live on Sky Sports in 2024 though some fixtures will be on free to air TV with either BBC or Channel 4.

But according to reports in France and comments made by IMG the plan is for the sport to have a streaming service created in 2024 which would be a massive win for the game and a step into the modern era for rugby league in this country.

This is just one change of many on the horizon for rugby league and the RFL who are also set to see movement on the board.

Dr Rimla Akhtar OBE has advised the RFL Board that she wishes to resign her position with effect from 31 December this year for personal reasons.

Dr Akhtar, who joined the Board in December 2019, shared her decision with members of the Rugby League Council at a meeting in Huddersfield today (Thursday).

Simon Johnson, the RFL Chair, said: “We are deeply saddened that Rimla has made this decision. She has been an outstanding colleague and made an exceptional contribution to Rugby League over the last four years. Rimla has brought her rigour and professionalism to the Board and to the Audit and Risk Committee, always helping our people to be their best. She has ensured that Inclusion is at the heart of the RFL and the work of the Board, driving the establishment and development of the sport’s first Inclusion Board. I know she will always be welcomed by all in Rugby League as a valued friend and supporter of the sport.”

Dr Akhtar said: “I chose to apply for this role because of the impact that this sport has in its communities and the potential it has to reach even more to make a positive difference more widely. I brought my strong values, many of which are aligned with those of the RFL, and looked to ensure that we always do the right thing for the sport, and each other. I am extremely proud of the work I have undertaken over the past four years for our sport, especially in the areas of Audit and Risk, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. I believe that both of these areas have been set up strongly for success and I look forward to seeing Rugby League and its communities flourish in the future as a result. I have appreciated the opportunity to serve the people of Rugby League through the RFL and wish the best for everyone involved with this special sport.”

The RFL will begin a recruitment process for a new Non-Executive Director in the New Year.
