Super League prop makes shock decision on his future

Wakefield Trinity prop Renouf Atomi has agreed a new deal with the club despite their relegation to the Championship which is something of a surprise given he was rumoured to be leaving mid-season last year.

It marks the second key re-signing in two days for Trinity after fellow forward Josh Bowden committed his future to the club yesterday.

All that tops off a positive week for Wakefield who despite being relegated from Super League in 2023 have been boosted by the confirmed team takeover by local businessman Matt Ellis, and a positive preliminary IMG grading that would see them in Super League for 2025.

This morning’s confirmation of Atoni committing to the club is yet more positive news with the club conforming it via their social medias and website, releasing the following statement.

“Wakefield Trinity is delighted to announce that Renouf Atoni has re-signed on a two year deal.

“Renouf, born in New Zealand, joined the club for the start of the 2023 season from NRL side Sydney Roosters He played a total of 43 games in the NRL with Canterbury Bulldogs scoring 3 tries.

“He is now 28, 6’3” and weighs in at over 17 stones. He made 22 appearances in his first year in Super League with Trinity and will aim to build on his strong finish to the 2023 season.”

Head Coach Daryl Powell said: “Renouf finished the season in a really positive way in 23. He is a big powerful player who has the best years of his career ahead of him. He’s a dynamic ball carrier who will really punish defences over the next couple of years. I am delighted to tie him down I’m looking forward to helping him grow his game to reach his full potential.”

Atoni had a rollercoaster first season at Belle Vue, as did many of the playing squad, but he shone on his pre-season debut in the traditional Boxing Day clash with Leeds Rhinos.

That day saw him cross over for a try however once the season came around he came under the scrutiny of fans.

With Trin’s first win midway through the season the form of Atoni seemed to bolster to the point where he established himself as a starter as the season closed out, and he’ll certainly be a handful to manage in the Championship.

Similar to Leigh during the 2022 season it would appear that Wakefield are building their Championship squad based on their ability to remain in Super League for the following year, as seen by this retention and that of Liam Kay, Josh Bowden and Luke Gale’s commitment to play on.
