Super League legend rules himself out of Castleford Tigers job

After a 28-0 defeat to Huddersfield Giants, Castleford Tigers parted company with Andy Last following protests from fans with supporters staying in the stadium to underline their disappointment.

Last was tasked with ensuring safety for the Tigers in the relegation scrap as they battle with Wakefield Trinity.

Now with the club needing an appointment a number of names have been mentioned including a shock move for former boss Daryl Powell after his Warrington Wolves exit.

Danny Ward has been mentioned whilst some fans have clamoured for legendary player Adrian Vowels to take over.

But he has ruled himself out of the running.

When asked by a fan on social media, he said: “No mate. I am not an option to coach.”

He would go on to add: “It’s very humbling to still thought of so highly by the Cas fans. I love the club and wish I could help.”

So the question remains, who will take over at the Jungle after Andy Last’s departure?

Last initially took over on a temporary basis as a caretaker with the club looking for a permanent replacement for Lee Radford, who was dismissed following their round three loss to Wigan Warriors, and after six games in a temporary role Last’s appointment was confirmed.

The club won as many games during that six game temporary spell with two wins from six, as they did under Last during his time as the official head coach with that record standing at two wins from thirteen games in all competitions.

That included ten Super League losses as well as an immediate exit from the Challenge Cup and with an overall record of just four wins from nineteen games, sitting bottom of the table and looking down the barrel of relegation it meant the club finally pulled the trigger.

Castleford released a statement, albeit a brief one, with the promise of further information after the weekend.

The statement read:

“Castleford Tigers can confirm that Andy Last has departed the club with immediate effect.

“The club will make a further statement after the weekend.”

The club need to act fast though they are helped by a week off due to the Challenge Cup Final.
