Round Two of the Betfred Super League did not stop the whirlwind of drama circling around Super League disciplinary and the controversy going alongside it.
The action started at Craven Park as Hull KR defeated Leeds Rhinos 22-12 in an engaging game though dominated by the conditions. It was also dominated by conversations about the new head contact rules which saw James Donaldson and Sam Lisone sin binned. Both could have received reds but also both were tackles that in the past would have been simply ignored.
Things on the Super League disciplinary front went into overdrive however on Friday night when Fa’amanu Brown was sent off for accidental head contact with Ben Currie. This turned the game which was 6-all at the time as the Wolves stormed to a 36-10 win over the Black and Whites.
On the same night Catalans Dragons defeated London Broncos teeing up the games on Saturday with the action starting between Huddersfield Giants and St Helens with the Saints claiming a 28-0 win despite losing Daryl Clark to the sin bin.
The main event of the weekend came outside of Super League where the new rules and the controversy around Super League disciplinary was nowhere to be seen as Wigan Warriors beat Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge thanks to a controversial Jake Wardle try.
Lastly, Salford Red Devils hung on to defeat Castleford Tigers on Sunday.
Super League disciplinary worries
Unsurprisingly, there are a number of clubs sweating in disciplinary and not least the Leeds Rhinos who could lose both Lisone and Donaldson to bans after the precedent set last week.
Furthermore, opponent Kelepi Tanginoa could be in trouble for a high tackle missed in Harry Newman’s try. A similar situation could befall Warrington Wolves when Liam Sutcliffe was denied a try.
Of course, the big talking point will surround how badly Brown is punished for his red card whilst teammate Tex Hoy could be in trouble for a high tackle as could opponent and former Wigan Warriors star Sam Powell who was making his home debut for the Warrington Wolves.
