St Helens suffer huge blow

St Helens coach Paul Wellens

Wigan Warriors are now top of the league but they are level on points with Catalans Dragons and St Helens in a fight for home semi-finals as well as the League Leaders’ Shield.

The Saints are in what Sky Sports’ Brian Carney has referred to as the “drive for five” and they have found some real form after their defeat to Leigh Leopards in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

However, they could have a problem or two with an injury for Konrad Hurrell as Paul Wellens said on Saints TV:

“Konrad got a bit of a calf strain, something that he’s had issues with in the past.

“We’re not in the business at this stage of the season of forcing people to stay out there and making what was a problem before a lot, a lot worse.

“We’ll get him assessed in the week and see where we’re at with that one.”

“Obviously it’s pretty soon after the game, so again I need to sit down with the medical staff and see where we’re at, hopefully it’s not too serious. But we’ll obviously need more information to determine that.”

There were potential head knocks for Jonny Lomax and Dan Norman.

On Lomax, Wellens said:

“No, Jonny’s fine, I was actually preparing to bring Jonny off anyway. He had a couple of niggles during the week and I would have liked to have brought him off the field a bit sooner but he’s obviously a very important player to us.

“Just as he was about to get brought off legitimately, as often happens, he took a little bang but he’s had the head assessment and he’s absolutely fine.”

On Norman, it was less positive:

“I’ll speak to the doctors, he got up and didn’t look too good so I’m assuming so, given the standards now around and those types of incidents.

“Again, I need to sit down with the doctors and see where we’re at in terms of whether Dan is available next week.”

Meanwhile, there is a doubt over Morgan Knowles:

“Again, he’s someone we’ve got to assess in the week, but he’s been carrying a bit of an issue for a number of weeks now. A growing issue that’s becoming a bit aggravated.

“So, given the fact that Morgan is an important player for us and Morgan is someone who again put his hand up, he can wait it out.

“I think since he’s come back from those couple of suspensions at the start of the year, he’s been absolutely outstanding for us.

“We’re hoping that he’ll be fit next week but again we’ll need more information.”
