Further reports that St Helens star is set to join Super League rivals

St Helens' Tommy Makinson, Lewis Dodd and Matt Whitley celebrate after the game at Huddersfield

St Helens star Tommy Makinson has been one of the best wingers in the Betfred Super League for well over a decade.

He made his first Grand Final appearance all the way back in 2011 against the Leeds Rhinos scoring a try for the Saints as they lost to Leeds Rhinos 32-16.

He would be a try scorer at Old Trafford for St Helens yet again in 2014 when he scored the decisive try against Wigan Warriors for a famous Grand Final win and ending an eight year wait for the Saints to lift the trophy.

However, Makinson would really come into his own a few years later. Like many at St Helens, it was Justin Holbrook who brought the best out of Makinson and in 2018 England reaped the rewards.

He was sensational against New Zealand in the series scoring a superb hat-trick as he won the Golden Boot.

Then from 2019 to 2022, he led the Saints to four consecutive Grand Final wins in a history making run.

This time frame also saw the Saints win two League Leaders’ Shields taking his total up to four. He also won the Challenge Cup in 2021 and the World Club Challenge in 2023.

He will undoubtedly go down as a St Helens legend when all is said and done especially as he creeps closer to 200 tries for the club.

But it is looking increasingly likely that the Saints will lose one of their stalwarts at the end of 2024.

Makinson is out of contract at St Helens so can officially negotiate with rival Super League clubs from May.

Despite this, it has long been reported that the St Helens winger will leave the club to join Catalans Dragons.

Rugby League Live initially reported this though the St Helens Star responded claiming Makinson was in talks to stay with the 10-time Super League Champions.

Then L’Independent in France and Sky Sports reported that Makinson would be making the move and now League Scene, who reported Catalans’ interest in February, has now also reported the news.

Saints have reportedly been interested in Tom Davies to replace him but Hull KR look set to sign him.
