St Helens have reportedly missed out on a major Super League signing for the 2025 Super League season.
French publication, L’Independent reported that St Helens were one of two clubs interested in signing Catalans Dragons star Tom Davies.
However, the other club reportedly interested in the former Wigan Warriors winger was Hull KR and they have reportedly won the race to sign the former Grand Finalist.
This comes from Jenna Brooks on Sky Sports who reported that Davies was set to sign for Hull KR for the 2024 season. This would mean that if St Helens were interested in Davies, as they reportedly were, they have missed out on him which could be a significant blow given the reports around one of their star players in the shape of winger Tommy Makinson.
St Helens star reportedly set to join Super League rivals
There has been a lot of talk about wingers signing for new clubs in 2025 including St Helens star Tommy Makinson.
The winger has been at St Helens his entire career but was linked with a shock move to Catalans Dragons by Rugby League Live and now Sky Sports and L’Independent have reported as such as well.
This is despite the rule that out of contract players in Super League cannot be approached by rival clubs until after May 1st giving their current club control of the situation.
Catalans Dragons are the club reportedly interested in the England international for 2025 as a replacement for Tom Johnstone who has been linked with a move to Wakefield Trinity or at the very least a return to England as his contract expires.
So, it makes sense that Catalans would be interested in Makinson but the St Helens Star has reported that the Saints are in talks with the winger to re-sign him to a long term deal.
They would still be in the driving seat until May 1st but if Makinson doesn’t agree a deal before then, then it’s a free for all.
Saints are at that time when they are going to have to start a mini-rebuild with a number of players hitting their twilight.
